What is the penalty for a third DUI conviction?
In Florida, a third DUI conviction is a felony offense and carries significantly greater penalties than a first or second DUI conviction. The legal consequences of a third DUI conviction in Florida may include fines of up to $5,000, jail time of up to five years, and a 10-year driver’s license suspension. Additionally, felony DUI convictions will result in a permanent criminal record, which will impact your future employment and other opportunities. In addition to the legal penalties, a person charged with a third DUI may be placed on probation for up to five years, during which time they may be required to participate in a substance abuse program if deemed necessary by the court. They may also be required to participate in DUI school, pay a probationary fee, and/or be subject to random drug and alcohol tests. In some cases, a judge may impose community service or other types of alternative sentencing in lieu of jail time. But in all cases, the person convicted of a third DUI will be required to pay the fines imposed by the court, which can be quite substantial. Overall, a third DUI conviction in Florida is a very serious offense and carries with it significant legal and personal consequences. It is wise to seek the advice of an experienced DUI attorney in order to understand the full extent of the penalties that may result from a DUI conviction.
