What is the penalty for a third DUI conviction?
The penalty for a third DUI conviction in Pennsylvania is severe. An offender will face a minimum of one year in jail and have to pay a fine of up to $2,500, plus court costs. The offender’s driver’s license will be revoked for 18 months and the offender may be required to serve an additional year of license suspension. The offender will also be subject to an alcohol highway safety school, be assessed up to $2,000 in “Ignition Interlock” device costs, and be placed on probation for an indefinite period of time. The court may also impose other requirements, such as attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, undergoing alcohol treatment or substance abuse evaluations, or doing community service. Additionally, for a third DUI offense the court may order the offender to install an “Ignition Interlock” device in the offender’s vehicle. An “Ignition Interlock” device is a breath-testing device which prevents the vehicle from starting if alcohol is detected on the driver’s breath. It is important to understand the severity of the penalties for a third DUI conviction in Pennsylvania, as a conviction could lead to serious and long-term consequences. Those convicted of a DUI should seek legal advice from an experienced DUI attorney to ensure their rights are protected.
