How does a DWI affect my driver’s license?

In Arkansas, if you are convicted of a Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) offense, it can have a significant impact on your driver’s license. Depending on the severity of the offense and number of offenses, you may face a temporary suspension, revocation, or denial of your driver’s license. If convicted of a first-time DWI offense, you may be subject to a minimum 90-day suspension of your driver’s license, up to a maximum 2-year suspension. Additionally, the court may require you to complete an alcohol education program prior to reinstating your driver’s license. A second DWI conviction within 5 years of the first offense can result in the revocation of your driver’s license for one year, or two years if you refused to take a chemical test. An additional suspension may be imposed if you have a prior conviction of a DWI-related offense. If convicted of three or more DWI offenses within five years, your driver’s license will be permanently revoked. In this case, you may be eligible for a restricted license after two years, provided you can clearly show that you are not a danger to the public. Regardless of the severity of the offense, you may also be required to complete an alcohol education program and have an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle prior to reinstating your driver’s license. It is important to note that driving with a suspended or revoked license is a criminal offense and can bring additional penalties.
