What should I do if I’m pulled over for suspected drunk driving?

If you are pulled over for suspected drunk driving (also known as driving while intoxicated, or DWI), the most important thing to remember is to remain calm and courteous. Pull over to the side of the road, roll down your window and turn off your car. Follow all instructions given by the officer. Be respectful and polite. Refrain from making jokes, arguing with the officer, or ignoring the officer’s instructions. You will be asked to perform certain tests, including a breathalyzer, and you must comply. Refusing to take a breathalyzer test can result in an automatic license suspension and can also be used against you in a court of law. In Washington State, you must submit to a breath test if requested by a law enforcement officer who believes that you are driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs. If your blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08 or higher, you can be arrested and charged with a DWI. If you are arrested for DWI, you have the right to seek the advice of an attorney. You should contact a qualified attorney, who will represent you in court and help protect your rights. Depending on the circumstances, a skilled attorney may be able to reduce or dismiss the charges against you.
