What is Title IX?
Title IX is a federal civil rights law that protects people from discrimination in education based on sex. It was passed in 1972 and is enforced by the Department of Education. Title IX applies to all educational institutions that receive federal funds, including public and private schools, universities, and colleges. Under Title IX, no educational institution receiving federal funding should discriminate against anyone on the basis of sex. This includes all aspects of education, from admissions, to academics, to athletics, to activities. Title IX also prohibits sexual harassment and sexual violence in any educational program or activity. This includes not only physical harassment, but also verbal and online harassment. Schools must have policies and procedures in place to prevent and address any harassment or violence based on sex or gender that occurs at school or school-related activities. Schools are expected to investigate reports of sexual harassment and sexual violence and take action to protect victims and prevent future occurrences. Schools must also provide support for anyone who has experienced sexual harassment or violence, such as counseling and medical treatment. By enforcing Title IX, the Department of Education is working to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to pursue an education regardless of their sex or gender.
