What is education reform?
Education reform is an effort to improve the quality of education in a school district or state. The challenge of reforming public schools has been taken up by leaders, educators, parents, and students in Oklahoma and across the nation. The goal of education reform is to ensure that all students have access to a quality education regardless of their zip code, race, or economic background. This means focusing on a range of changes from curriculum improvements, to better teacher training and development, increased support for students with special needs, and improved school funding. In Oklahoma, the major education reform efforts have included the Achieving Classroom Excellence (ACE) program. This program focuses on improving student achievement by providing resources to help teachers and principals build on what works in their respective schools. Another area of focus for Oklahoma is increasing the number of students attending college. In 2017, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education created the Complete College Oklahoma Plan. This plan aimed to increase the number of Oklahomans enrolled in college and help increase the number of graduates earning degrees by 2027. Educational reform is an ongoing process. By promoting policies that equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in college and beyond, Oklahoma can ensure that its future generations can thrive. Education reform is essential to improving the quality of education and the opportunities for Oklahoma students.
