What is the law on bullying in schools?
In Oklahoma, bullying is prohibited by the School Bullying Prevention Act. According to the act, bullying is defined as “any pattern of behavior designed to cause distress or harm to another person that is sufficiently severe or pervasive to limit or deny a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from educational services or activities.” The act also makes clear that bullying must be considered carefully, taking into account a student’s age, disability, gender, race, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, social class, or other distinguishing characteristic. The act outlaws bullying both on and off school property, as well as through technology and other means. Schools must have a bullying prevention program and provide students with the necessary information to identify, prevent, and respond to bullying. The schools must also provide training to faculty and staff to help them recognize and address instances of bullying. Bullying is prohibited by state law, and it can be reported to school administrators and to the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Local school districts must also develop a policy to address the effects of bullying. The policy must include a procedure for responding to incidents of bullying, as well as appropriate disciplinary measures for students who commit it. Overall, Oklahoma has a comprehensive anti-bullying law that seeks to protect all students from victimization and ensure that our schools remain safe and welcoming places for learning and personal growth.
