What is the role of the state department of education in education law?
The Washington State Department of Education (WSDE) plays an important role in the education law of the state. Its mission is to ensure that all children in the state have access to a quality education that is fair, equitable, and prepares them for success in adulthood. WSDE establishes and enforces rules for educational programs, standards and assessments, and implements state and federal laws regarding education. This includes setting academic standards and testing, developing and adopting rules for credentialing and approving programs for teachers and administrators, and providing resources, such as textbooks and other instructional materials. WSDE also provides technical assistance and oversight to local school districts and other education agencies. This includes providing guidance on the implementation of educational policies and curriculum, evaluating the performance of schools and programs, reviewing financial and personnel information, and providing assistance with special education services. With its oversight, the WSDE helps ensure that students, parents, educators, and administrators have access to an equitable education system, and are held accountable to standards of excellence. By working to ensure that all students have access to quality education, WSDE helps make sure Washington’s future is bright.
