What are the different types of elections?

In New Mexico, there are three main types of elections: Primary elections, General elections, and Special elections. Primary elections are the first step in a series of elections that are used to decide the final nominees for each political party. These elections are used to decide which candidates will be running in the general election for each party. Primary elections are held in the spring of the election year and are open to registered party members only. General elections are the main election day, when all registered voters can cast their ballot for president, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, and local offices. On this day, all registered voters can vote for a single party’s candidates or for candidates from different parties. Special elections are special elections that are held in addition to the general election. These are usually held to decide on issues such as state constitutional amendments, bond issues, recall elections, and school board elections that cannot wait until the general election day. Special elections can also be held to fill a vacancy in the state legislature or other elected positions. No matter the type of election or the candidate, all New Mexico residents must register to vote in order to participate in any election. Most New Mexico counties offer same-day voter registration, making it easy for eligible voters to participate in the elections.
