What are the requirements for absentee voting?

In California, absentee voting provides eligible voters with an alternative way to participate in the election process. An absentee ballot is a ballot issued to a voter who is unable to attend their polling place on election day. In order to be eligible for absentee voting in California, a voter must meet certain requirements. First, the voter must either be unable to attend the polls on Election Day due to a physical disability or an illness, be out of the county on Election Day, or be in a detention facility. In addition, the voter must be a United States citizen and a California resident. It is important to note that a voter must be registered to vote in the county in which they are requesting a ballot for absentee voting. Once the voter has met the eligibility requirements, they must fill out an application for absentee voting. This application must be received by the election official in the voter’s county no later than seven days prior to the election. The voter must then return their ballot to their county elections office no later than 8:00 pm on Election Day. Ballots are typically mailed out to voters two weeks before the election. Absentee voting allows eligible California voters to cast their ballots without having to go to their polling place on Election Day. This provides an important opportunity for those unable to physically attend the polls. It is important that all California voters understand the requirements for absentee voting and how to complete the process to ensure their votes are counted.
