What are the voter eligibility requirements?
In California, citizens must meet certain eligibility requirements in order to be able to vote in any federal or state election. In order to register to vote, a person must be: 1. A U.S. citizen 2. At least 18 years old on or before the day of the election 3. A resident of California 4. Not currently in state or federal prison or on parole for the conviction of a felony 5. Not found by a court to be mentally incompetent to vote In addition, voters must declare their party affiliation if they are registering to vote in a primary election. If they do not declare a party affiliation, they can only vote in non-partisan elections. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and local elections officials are responsible for maintaining voter eligibility records. Before each election, they verify the eligibility of all registered voters. A person who is registered but ineligible to vote may be asked to re-register. In order to stay eligible to vote, a person must re-register whenever they change their name or address. This can be done at the DMV or online at registertovote.ca.gov. The last day to register to vote in an election is 15 days before the election. The California Secretary of State also provides a variety of voting resources for eligible voters to make sure that they have all the information they need to cast their ballots.
