What are the rules for third-party candidates?

In Texas, third-party candidates must follow the same rules as major party candidates in order to get on the ballot. These rules are outlined by the Texas Secretary of State and must be met in order for a third-party candidate to appear on the general election ballot. First, the candidate must submit a written application for placement on the ballot. This application must include the name of the candidate, the address of the candidate, and the political party that the candidate is representing. The candidate must also file an application for a place on the ballot with the state election authority in the county where the candidate resides or is registered to vote in order to be placed on the ballot. In addition, the candidate must also submit a nominating petition that shows written proof of the candidate’s candidacy. This petition must be signed by at least 500 qualified voters who reside in the district the candidate is running in. The petition must also include a statement of support from a political party, or from registered political organizations, that supports the candidacy of the candidate. Finally, all third-party candidates in Texas must also comply with the federal election laws that govern national elections. These laws include the requirements for how to report campaign contributions, how to legally solicit campaign contributions, and how to properly report expenditures. All of these activities must be conducted lawfully in order for any candidate, from a major party or third-party, to be successful in the election process.
