What is the role of the Electoral College?

The Electoral College is a unique part of the election process in Washington and in the United States as a whole. It is made up of members known as electors who are responsible for actually selecting the President of the United States. In Washington, each state is given a certain number of electors based on its population. The electors are chosen through a process outlined in the state’s election laws. When citizens go to the polls to select the President of the United States on election day, they are actually voting for the electors in their state. The electors are then responsible for taking the votes of their state and casting a ballot for the President. Once all of the Electoral College ballots have been cast, the results are then sent to the US Senate where they are officially tabulated. The candidate with the most votes then wins the election. The Electoral College system allows citizens to have an indirect vote in the election of the President. It also helps balance the influence of large and small states, since each state receives the same number of electors regardless of population. The Electoral College also helps to protect the democratic process by preventing any one state from having too much power in the election.
