What is the process for selecting delegates to national conventions?

In California, the process of selecting delegates to national conventions is a long and complicated one. It starts with registered political parties selecting their own delegates to the conventions. Party rules set forth the qualifications for becoming a delegate and how many delegates a party may select. The actual selection of delegates is generally done at a party’s state convention. During the convention, individuals wanting to be delegates must submit a delegate application that includes their personal information, party affiliation, and any other relevant information. Once their application is received and approved, they will become a delegate to the national convention. In California, those selected as delegates must be officially certified by the Secretary of State. The certification process requires the delegates to first be officially recognized by their local or state party committees, and then must submit an affidavit affirming their eligibility for the office. Upon completion of all the requirements, the Secretary of State will issue an official certificate of nomination for the delegates. The delegates then attend the national convention and cast votes for the presidential nominee or cast votes on any state issues discussed therein. It is a lengthy and tedious process, but it is necessary for the selection of delegates to national conventions.
