What is meant by the term “recall election”?

A “recall election” is a special type of Texas election in which voters are asked to decide whether or not an elected official should remain in office. In a recall election, citizens can sign a petition to remove an elected official from a position. This is a way for citizens to hold their elected officials accountable for their actions. In order for a recall election to take place, the citizens must collect enough signatures to reach a certain percentage of total voters in the jurisdiction in question. If the minimum number of signatures is met, the Texas Secretary of State will then set a date for the election to take place. In the recall election, all voters in the jurisdiction will be eligible to vote, and the elected official must receive a simple majority of the votes in order to remain in office. If the official cannot receive a majority of the votes, they will be removed from office and another individual will be elected in their place. Ultimately, a recall election is an important way for citizens to have control over their government. It provides the opportunity for citizens to express their dissatisfaction with their elected official’s performance and to take action to remove them from office.
