What is the purpose of a ballot initiative?

A ballot initiative is a type of lawmaking process used in California in which citizens can put forth a proposed law and have it put on the ballot for a public vote. This gives citizens the power to create laws through the direct vote of their peers, rather than having to go through the government or elected representatives. The purpose of a ballot initiative is to give citizens a direct say in the lawmaking process in their state. Through the initiative process, Californians have the ability to have their voices heard and make changes in laws they may not have been able to do so through traditional means. The process of a ballot initiative begins with a petition. This petition must be signed by at least 8% of the registered voters in the state in order for the proposed law to be put on the ballot for a public vote. If the petition is successful, it then becomes an official ballot initiative. The public vote on the ballot initiative is how it is made into a law. A majority of the votes must be in favor of the proposed law in order for it to pass. It is important to note that ballot initiatives can also be used to repeal laws that already exist. By giving citizens a direct say in the lawmaking process, ballot initiatives make California a model of democracy and open government.
