What is the process of recounts and challenge of election results?

In California, the process of recounts and challenges of election results is taken very seriously. Recounts and challenges for election results must be requested and approved by the Secretary of State. First, recount requests must be filed within three calendar days after the close of the polls. The requester must include a written statement explaining the reasons for the request and the specific precincts in which a recount is requested. The fee for a recount is based upon the number of precincts to be recounted and needs to also include a deposit to cover the costs of the recount. After the recount is complete, the results of the recount must be certified by the county board of supervisors. They will certify the recount and amend the statement of vote if necessary. Challenges of election results happen when a party or individual believes there were violations in the election process. A written notice of the challenge of the election must be filed with the county board of supervisors before the certification of the results. The county board must investigate the claims and act on it within five days. If the claim is found to be true, the board will take action and change any election results necessary. Finally, the California Secretary of State has to officially certify the election results. If there are disputed election results, the Secretary of State may withhold their certification until the results are resolved. This will ensure that the election results are fair and accurate for all California residents.
