When and where do I have to vote?

In California, the date of a primary or general election can be found on the Secretary of State’s website. The location of your polling place can be found on a voter information guide sent out by the county elections office before the election. On election day you must bring a valid photo identification card, or another acceptable form of identification, to your polling place. It is important to note that identification is not required for a vote by mail ballot. Additionally, if you are not registered to vote, you may still register or conditionally register on election day at your polling place. If you can’t find your polling place or have questions about voting, the Secretary of State has a hotline available to answer your questions. If you live in California, you can call (800) 345-VOTE (8683) for assistance. It’s also possible to use the state’s “My Voter Status” website to determine the address of your polling place, as well as the dates and times you can vote. If you are registered to vote in California you should receive a sample ballot, which includes a mailing address for the polling place. You can go to the polling place or mail in your ballot, but it’s important to remember that it must be postmarked by the day of the election, and received by the county elections office by the Friday after the election to be counted. It’s important to remember to vote, as your voice matters in the democratic process. You can make a difference in your local, state, and national elections when you take part in the process and cast your ballot.
