What are the voter eligibility requirements?
In Washington, the voter eligibility requirements to be able to participate in state and local elections are straightforward. First, the individual must be a United States citizen, and a resident of the State of Washington. Secondly, the individual must have reached the age of majority, or 18 years old, before the election in which they plan to participate. Lastly, the individual must not be disqualified from voting due to a court order, such as a conviction for a serious crime. The registration process for eligible voters is simple. Individuals may either sign-up online to register, or request a Voter Registration Card through the mail. During the registration process, individuals must provide their name, date of birth, address, and driver’s license number (if they have one). Upon completion of the registration process, they will receive a ballot in the mail in order to cast their vote. Washington also allows for automatic voter registration at the Department of Licensing, so individuals may opt-in to be automatically registered when receiving or renewing their drivers license. Additionally, individuals who are not yet 18 years old may pre-register through the online process, and will automatically be registered on their 18th birthday. In summary, to be eligible to vote in Washington, individuals must be a United States citizen, be 18 years or older, reside in Washington, and not be disqualified from voting due to a court order.
