What is “voter fraud” and how is it addressed?
Voter fraud is an illegal action in which someone tries to interfere with the voting process or artificially skew the results of an election. It consists of activities that include stuffing ballot boxes, registering false identities to cast votes, deliberately misinforming voters about election dates and locations, or otherwise attempting to corrupt the outcome of an election. In Texas, voter fraud is addressed by making sure voters are qualified and registered to vote properly before entering a voting booth. Voters are required to provide valid identification, such as a driver’s license, state-issued ID or other documents approved by the State. Election officials also conduct background checks to ensure all voters meet the state’s qualifications. The Texas Secretary of State, the state’s chief elections officer, is tasked with overseeing and enforcing election laws in the state. His office is also responsible for educating voters on the voting process and helping to identify and prevent voter fraud. The office is also authorized to investigate any potential cases of voter fraud. If evidence of fraud is found, the office may prosecute the case in court, seek a civil penalty or ask for criminal prosecution. In addition, the State Attorney General can bring criminal charges against those suspected of voter fraud. The Texas Secretary of State’s website provides additional resources on the state’s election laws, including how to report suspected voter fraud.
