In the state of Washington, employers are generally not allowed to vary an employee’s wages without their agreement. According to the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries, employers are required to pay employees their agreed-upon wages or provide a written agreement that specifically states that the employee is being paid a different amount. Unless this written agreement is in place, employers are not allowed to change an employee’s wages without their agreement. In addition to the written agreement requirement, employers must also abide by the state minimum wage laws. Currently, the minimum wage in Washington is $12.00 per hour. Any changes to an employee’s wages must meet or exceed the state minimum wage. Employers cannot decrease an employee’s wages below the minimum wage without their written agreement. Furthermore, any changes to wages must be applied equally to all employees in the same position. Employers must apply any wage increases or decreases equally among all employees in the same job classification. This means that if one employee is given an increase in wages, the same amount must be given to all other employees in the same position.
