Are employers allowed to impose working hour restrictions on employees?
In Washington, employers are allowed to impose working hour restrictions on employees, but there are some limits. Generally, the state does not have any laws concerning working hours, so employers can set whatever restrictions or requirements they feel are necessary. That said, Washington does have a state-wide minimum wage of $13.50 per hour, which can create some restrictions on how many hours an employee works. In Washington, employers must also provide reasonable breaks, including a 10-minute break for every four hours of work. Furthermore, if an employee is under the age of 18 and not completing an intern program, they must be given a minimum of 30 minutes of break time for each 5-hour shift. This break time can be unpaid. Additionally, employers must provide meal breaks for any employee who works five or more hours. When it comes to overtime, Washington employers must pay employees 1.5 times their regular rate for any hours worked over 40 in a week. Employees who are considered to be exempt from overtime pay must meet certain criteria according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. In other words, in Washington, employers are allowed to impose working hour restrictions on employees, but they must also abide by minimum wage, break time, and overtime pay laws.
