What type of discrimination is unlawful?

In Virginia, it is unlawful to discriminate against any person or group of people based on a protected class. Protected classes in Virginia include race, color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, age, marital status, disability, and genetic information. All employers in Virginia are prohibited from taking any adverse action against an employee or candidate based on these protected classes. When it comes to discrimination, Virginia also covers harassment that occurs based on the same protected classes. This normally means any offensive comments or actions, verbal or physical, made in the workplace or during the hiring process that targets an individual. Other types of unlawful discrimination are retaliation, failing to make reasonable accommodations for an employee’s disability, refusing to hire an individual because of their age, and failing to pay equally for the same work. Discrimination is a serious issue and is not tolerated in Virginia. Anyone who has experienced discrimination or harassment in the workplace or during the hiring process, should report it and discuss it with their employer, as Virginia does not tolerate unlawful discrimination.
