What is sexual harassment?

Sexual harassment is a form of illegal discrimination that takes place in the workplace in North Carolina. It is a form of unwanted and unwelcome behavior that is sexual in nature. Sexual harassment can come in many forms such as unwelcome sexual advances, inappropriate sexual comments, physical contact, or requests for sexual favors. Sexual harassment is not limited to only men harassing women. It can occur between two co-workers of the same sex as well. It is important to remember that sexual harassment can also occur between a supervisor and an employee that is different in rank or status. It is important for everyone in the workplace to understand that it is illegal and inappropriate to make sexual advances, harass someone else in a sexual way, or make any comments that are sexual in nature. If an employee witnesses or experiences sexual harassment, they have the right to file a complaint with their employer or with the North Carolina Human Relations Commission. Employers are obligated to protect and provide a safe work environment for their employees. This means that they must create safeguards against sexual harassment, including setting up policies and procedures for employees to report any incidences of sexual harassment that occur. Employers should also create an open environment to discuss sexual harassment so that employees can understand what constitutes it and how to handle it.
