What is entertainment law?
Entertainment law is the area of law that deals with the entertainment industry. It covers everything from film, television, music, and theater to literature, video games, and the internet. In New York, entertainment law is the practice of doing legal work for those in the entertainment industry, whether they are musicians, actors, writers, directors, producers, broadcasters, or other professionals. It includes advice and representation on intellectual property issues and copyright, contracts, licensing, censorship, privacy, and defamation matters. It also involves representing clients in negotiations with various parties, from distributors to agents to studios. Entertainment attorneys can handle negotiations for actors and performers as well as work with publishers, record companies, and production companies. Additionally, entertainment lawyers may handle disputes between parties, such as contractual disputes over intellectual property rights and royalties, and also handle disputes that may arise from accusations of plagiarism or defamation. Furthermore, entertainment lawyers may provide advice regarding tax arrangements and transactions between parties. With the internet and other emerging technologies, entertainment law will continue to evolve and include new areas of practice.
