How do I register a patent?
To register a patent in Washington state, you must first apply to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). You must submit an application that includes all the necessary information about your invention that would be used to identify it and make it unique. The application must include a detailed description of the invention, drawings of the invention, and claims of the invention. You must also submit an “Original Disclosure Document” or a “Non-Patent Literature Citation” with the application. This document is used to disclose any prior art that may have been related to the invention. It is also important that your application is accurate and complete, as an incomplete submission will lead to a delay. In addition to the application, you are also required to pay a filing fee and a search fee. The filing fee is a fee paid to the USPTO to cover the costs of examining and processing the application. The search fee is a fee paid to the USPTO to cover the cost of conducting a search to determine if your invention is novel and not a duplicate of a previous invention. Once the application is received, the USPTO will review it and determine whether the invention is patentable. If the invention is determined to be patentable, you will be granted a patent with a term of 20 years from the date of application. You will also be able to enforce the patent to protect your invention from infringement.
