What is the Toxic Substances Control Act?
The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) is a federal law that was enacted in 1976 to protect the public from the potentially harmful effects of certain chemicals. This law requires manufacturers and distributors to gather and submit information on the health and safety of thousands of chemicals used in everyday items. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses this information to determine the risks posed by particular chemicals and regulates use of those substances where appropriate. Under the Toxic Substances Control Act, the EPA is authorized to regulate the production, importation, use, and disposal of chemical substances and mixtures. The EPA may take actions such as testing and labeling, restricting or banning certain chemicals, and requiring manufacturers to warn about potential risks. In Virginia, the Toxic Substance Control Act is implemented by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The DEQ is responsible for overseeing the safe management of hazardous wastes, minimizing environmental risks posed by chemicals, and encouraging the production of safer products. The Toxic Substances Control Act is an important law that helps protect the public from the harmful effects of chemicals. It is important to know the law, understand the risks posed by particular chemicals, and use products safely. Following these guidelines will help ensure a healthy and safe environment for everyone.
