What is the Clean Water Act?
The Clean Water Act is a United States federal law that works to protect the quality of the country’s water resources. This law was passed in 1972 and it establishes the basic structure for regulating pollutant discharges into the waters of the United States. The Clean Water Act is the primary law that regulates pollution in U.S. waters, both inland and coastal. In South Carolina, the Clean Water Act has been used to protect the state’s rivers, streams, lakes, and other water resources from contamination. The State of South Carolina has adopted the federal requirements of the Clean Water Act, and has also set additional water quality requirements for their state waters. This includes requirements such as discharging wastewater, limiting runoff from agricultural and urban areas, controlling storm water runoff from construction sites, and setting water quality standards. The Clean Water Act has also been used in South Carolina to help promote programs such as the Swamp Rabbit Trail project that helps to improve water quality in the Reedy River. This project was completed in 2020 and it helped to reduce the amount of runoff pollution that was entering the Reedy River. The Clean Water Act is an important law that helps to protect the quality of the water resources in the United States, including those in the state of South Carolina. This law helps to preserve the environment and keep our water sources safe and clean for generations to come.
