What is the Clean Air Act?
The Clean Air Act is a federal law in the United States designed to protect and improve air quality. Specifically, the Clean Air Act restricts the amount of air pollutants, such as particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and other contaminants, that can be emitted into the environment. In California specifically, the state has incorporated additional aspects of the act, setting stricter standards and regulations for many pollutants. The Clean Air Act also covers matters of vehicle emissions and has placed stricter standards on vehicles such as cars, trucks, and buses. California has adopted its own Vehicle Inspection Program, focusing on newer cars, which is designed to ensure that vehicles meet regulation standards set forth by the Clean Air Act and the California Air Resources Board. The Clean Air Act also covers things like industrial sources of pollution. In California, the California Air Resources Board is responsible for issuing guidelines to ensure industrial units meet the air quality standards set by the Clean Air Act. These standards help protect public health and the environment from air pollution, such as hazardous air pollutants from industrial sources. The Clean Air Act is a foundational piece of environmental law in the United States for protecting and improving air quality. Its implementation in California has helped keep the air clean, thus protecting public health and the environment.
