What is the Clean Air Act?
The Clean Air Act is a federal law created in 1970 to protect air quality and the ozone layer. It has been amended multiple times since its inception in order to regularly update it with new regulations and standards. The Clean Air Act is monitored and enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which sets and enforces national air quality standards. The Clean Air Act covers a broad range of pollutants, including those from power plants, factories, and automobiles. The EPA works to reduce emissions of harmful air pollutants by setting standards for emissions of certain pollutants and requiring states to meet those standards. This can include requiring air pollution control equipment at industrial sources and setting limits on emissions from vehicles. The Clean Air Act also works to reduce acid rain by limiting emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from coal-fired power plants. The Act also protects wilderness areas by setting standards for national parks and other areas with high air quality standards. It does this by regulating air pollution levels and preventing new sources of air pollution in such areas. The Clean Air Act is important for ensuring that air quality in Washington and throughout the country remains safe and healthy and that the environment is protected from the impacts of air pollution. It is a cornerstone of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s mission and is a major driver of innovation, leading to the development of new technologies and solutions to reduce air pollution.
