What is the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)?
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is a federal law that was passed in the United States in 1969. It is the first major national environmental law and is one of the most significant environmental policies in the world. NEPA requires the federal government to assess and consider the environmental impacts of proposed activities before they are carried out. The purpose of the law is to ensure that the environment is taken into consideration when decisions are made on projects that affect national resources. Under NEPA, public agencies must evaluate the potential impacts of any proposed project. This evaluation includes the effects on air, water, and land quality, as well as effects to wildlife and people who may live or work close to the project area. In California, NEPA is enforced by the California Environmental Protection Agency, which works in conjunction with the federal government to ensure that all regulations are being met. The state of California also has its own set of environmental laws, such as the California Environmental Quality Act, which requires all state and local agencies to consider the environmental impacts of proposed projects. All in all, the National Environmental Policy Act is an important law that ensures our environment is taken into consideration when making decisions on activities that may affect national resources. It is an essential law for California and helps protect the environment from potential harm.
