What is the Coastal Zone Management Act?

The Coastal Zone Management Act is a law passed by the state of California in 1976 to protect the state’s coastlines and ocean. This law helps to control and reduce the impacts of human activity on coastal resources and habitats. It also promotes wise and sustainable use of ocean resources. Under the Coastal Zone Management Act, the California Coastal Commission (CCC) is responsible for protecting the state’s coastal resources and habitats. The CCC regulates and monitors activities within the state’s coastal zone. This includes development and activities that may affect land, water, air, or wildlife. This law is also designed to protect access to the coast. To this end, the CCC implements policies to ensure public access to the California coastline. This includes establishing and maintaining public access to the coast for recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, and surfing, as well as programs that support restoration of habitats and natural resources. The Coastal Zone Management Act also seeks to promote coastal preservation, development, and management activities. This includes encouraging activities such as tourism, fishing, and scientific research, as well as protecting coastal and cultural resources. Finally, the law also works to ensure that the public is aware of the value of coastal resources and their importance to the state of California.
