What are NEPA and CEQA?
NEPA and CEQA are two of the most important environmental laws in Washington State. NEPA, or the National Environmental Policy Act, is a 1969 federal law that requires federal agencies to consider the environmental impact of their actions. This law requires environmental impact statements (EIS) to be produced for major government funded or permitted projects. The EIS must analyze and provide information about the implementation of the project and any potential environmental damage that may be caused by it. CEQA, or the California Environmental Quality Act, is a California law from 1970 that defines a “model” for sustainable development. It requires state and local agencies to consider the impacts of development projects on the environment before allowing them to move forward. CEQA applies to construction, transportation, urban planning, land use, and energy projects. It is designed to ensure that government actions are consistent with maintaining the state’s natural resources. Together, NEPA and CEQA provide important environmental protections in Washington State. They make sure that the environmental consequences of development projects are considered and that the public has the opportunity to weigh in on potential impacts. These laws are a key part of Washington’s commitment to protecting our environment and promoting sustainable development.
