What are the environmental permitting requirements?
In Virginia, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regulates activities that have the potential to impact the environment. As part of this regulation, Virginia has established environmental permitting requirements for certain activities. The two main types of environmental permits in Virginia are Stormwater Discharge Permits and Air Pollution Control Permits. Stormwater Discharge Permits are required of facilities that discharge stormwater into rivers or streams in Virginia, and of activities that could lead to stormwater pollution. Air Pollution Control Permits are required of any facility that emits particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic compounds, and other pollutants into the air. In order to obtain environmental permits, applicants in Virginia must submit an application to DEQ. Applications must include descriptions of the activity and anticipated environmental impacts, and any reports or studies that may be applicable. After the application is received, DEQ conducts an evaluation of the proposed activity and its potential effects on the environment. DEQ may require additional information before issuing a permit. In addition to the issuance of permits, DEQ also conducts periodic inspections and compliance monitoring of the regulated activities to ensure they are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. DEQ may also issue penalties if an applicant does not comply with permit terms or applicable environmental regulations. Overall, by requiring environmental permits throughout Virginia, DEQ is dedicated to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable activities.
