What is the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act?
The Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) is a federal law that was enacted in 1986. It was specifically designed to address the growing problem of hazardous waste sites in the United States and ensure that they are cleaned up. The law allows the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to create a list of hazardous waste sites known as the National Priority List (NPL). The law then provides money to clean up these sites. The law ensures that hazardous waste sites are identified, properly assessed and then cleaned up to protect the environment and public health.
