What is the Environmental Justice Movement?

The Environmental Justice Movement is a civil rights movement that is focused on protecting communities that are disproportionately harmed by environmental hazards. This movement is based on the idea that everyone should have an equal right to a clean, safe environment regardless of their race, economic status, or location. The Environmental Justice Movement was first pushed into the national spotlight in the 1980s by environmental activists who pointed out the environmental and health risks that people of color and low-income communities were facing in Washington and other states. The Environmental Justice Movement has attempted to increase environmental protection and more equitable outcomes for communities of color, low-income individuals, and Indigenous peoples. The movement has sought to increase access to environmental decision-making processes and ensure that those decisions are affected by the voices of people living in impacted communities. The movement works to ensure that environmental regulations are enforced with impartiality and that the most vulnerable communities are given the protection they need. Additionally, the Environmental Justice Movement seeks to ensure that access to clean air, water, and land are made available to everyone. The Environmental Justice Movement has had some success in achieving its goals, including passing laws that restrict pollution from factories and other hazardous activities. The movement has also been successful in advocating for increased funding to help impoverished communities create healthier, more sustainable environments. The Environmental Justice Movement seeks to make sure that everyone has access to a healthy environment, and that the needs of the disenfranchised are taken into account.
