What is the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act?

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) is a federal law that was passed in 1976 to protect the health of people and the environment from the improper management of hazardous and solid wastes. This law is enforced in Washington by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. RCRA requires anyone who generates, transports, stores, or disposes of hazardous wastes to do so using the proper methods in order to protect human health and the environment. RCRA sets out guidelines for the management of hazardous and solid wastes. It covers everything from how hazardous waste is disposed of to the labeling of hazardous materials. It also applies to any type of waste, including chemicals, pesticides, and medical waste. RCRA also sets out regulations for underground storage tanks. These tanks must have proper designs and be regularly inspected for leaks. It also requires the use of hazardous waste management plans which must be approved by the EPA before anything is disposed of. In addition, RCRA requires the manufacturing, processing, and distribution of hazardous materials to be done in accordance with certain safety regulations. Companies are required to provide safety training to employees and provide appropriate safety equipment, as well as to keep track of hazardous materials and wastes. RCRA is a crucial law that helps Washington ensure the safety of its communities and environment. It sets out guidelines and regulations to help ensure hazardous waste is managed properly and in a way that protects the environment and people’s health.
