What is the Endangered Species Act?

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is an important piece of environmental law in Washington that helps protect species from becoming extinct. This act was passed in 1973 and is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). This act helps to protect a variety of wildlife species, plants, and their habitats by prohibiting activities that are likely to cause a species to become in danger of extinction. The USFWS is responsible for deciding if a species is endangered, and then they make sure that its natural habitat is also safeguarded. Additionally, the USFWS can create plans to protect and manage species, as well as develop conservation strategies and plans. The ESA also has many provisions in place to protect species. For example, it prohibits people from taking, importing, selling, or owning any species of animals that are listed as endangered or threatened. It also gives USFWS the power to designate critical habitat for species that are listed as endangered or threatened. Additionally, it requires federal agencies to consult with USFWS when making decisions that may affect species listed under the ESA. The ESA also has penalties for those who violate its provisions. These range from fines and other legal penalties to imprisonments for severe violations. It is important for people to understand the ESA and abide by its requirements in order to help protect Washington’s species for future generations.
