What is the Federal Equine Identification Plan?
The Federal Equine Identification Plan (FEIP) is a national program designed to help identify horses throughout the United States. The FEIP was developed in response to the growing number of horses that were being shipped across state lines and to help protect the welfare of these animals. The FEIP works by having horse owners register their animals with the USDA Animal Identification and Management System (AIMS). During this process, the horse owner will provide information such as the animal’s name, breed, age and color. The owner will also be issued an identification number specific to their horse. This unique number will then be entered into a nationwide database where the information can be accessed by states and the federal government. In the state of Washington, all horses must be registered with the FEIP. This registration is important as it helps ensure traceability, which is critical to protecting horses in the event of a contagious disease outbreak. In addition, the FEIP also provides the public with access to the database, allowing them to search for horses that have gone missing and to view registration information of horses throughout the country. Ultimately, the FEIP is an important program for the welfare of horses. It serves as an important tool for tracking horses across state lines and for ensuring that these animals are properly cared for by providing owners with an identification number to ensure the safety and traceability of their animal.
