What is a parenting coordinator?
A parenting coordinator is an individual selected by the court or agreed upon by parents to help manage complex situations in family court. In Texas, the courts are able to appoint a parenting coordinator to assist with matters related to custody and visitation. The parenting coordinator is a neutral third party and does not provide counseling services. Instead, the parenting coordinator helps families create and maintain a healthy relationship between the parents and their children. The main role of a parenting coordinator is to help families develop and carry out a court-ordered parenting plan or visitation schedule. The parenting coordinator works with both the parents and their legal representatives to determine a reasonable plan for visitation or custody. They also help educate parents on effective parenting skills while providing information on how to cooperate with each other. The parenting coordinator also assists in resolving issues that arise between the parents. To be effective, a parenting coordinator needs to be familiar with family law and be knowledgeable in how to mediate and help families successfully develop a parenting plan. The parenting coordinator must also be familiar with local court rules related to family law. In Texas, a parenting coordinator must complete a 40 hour course and pass a written examination to be certified.
