What is joint physical custody?

Joint physical custody is a type of family law arrangement in Alaska that allows both parents to have legal physical custody of their children, meaning that both parents will be involved in the child’s physical care. In a joint physical custody arrangement, the children will generally split their time between the two parents’ homes. This arrangement allows the parents to decide each other’s involvement in the child’s day-to-day activities, such as the amount of time spent with each parent and the types of activities the child will engage in. Joint physical custody is a flexible arrangement, and parents can negotiate the specific details of the arrangement. However, there are some terms that are usually included in joint physical custody arrangements. These terms often include clearly defined parent-time schedules, vacation and holiday spending, and communication arrangements between the parents regarding health, education, and welfare of the children. The arrangements may also include guidelines about parental decision-making. Joint physical custody is considered to be a beneficial arrangement for children because it allows them to maintain relationships with both parents. It also allows both parents to remain involved in the day-to-day care of the child and generally results in less disruption in the child’s life than other custody arrangements. In cases where joint physical custody is not possible, the parents may negotiate a parallel parenting arrangement where they share legal custody but have limited contact with each other.
