What is a visitation schedule?

A visitation schedule is a court-ordered plan for when a non-custodial parent can see their child. In California, visitation schedules are typically outlined in all child custody court orders. They establish when and for how long a non-custodial parent can see their child, and often provide for holidays, birthdays, and other special events. California family law recognizes the importance of both parents’ relationship with a child and encourages frequent and continuing contact with both parents. Visitation schedules can be quite detailed and can include provisions for alternate weekends, holidays, summers, and other important dates. The visitation schedule should include dates, times, and locations for visitation, transportation arrangements, as well as clear instructions regarding pick up/drop off times and locations. Visitation schedules can also provide specific instructions regarding meals, activities, and communication with the other parent. Whenever possible, the court encourages parents to work out a visitation schedule that will meet the needs of their family. However, if the parents cannot agree on a visitation schedule, then a judge will make the final decision. Keeping a written record of all agreements and court orders is important so that both parents have an understanding of their rights and responsibilities.
