What is Fair Housing Law?

Fair Housing Law is a set of laws that protect people from discrimination when looking for and occupying housing. This law applies in California and is enforced by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Fair Housing Law protects people from being discriminated against by landlords, mortgage lenders, real estate agents, and others in the housing market based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or disability. This means that people cannot be refused housing or have higher rents or fees simply because of who they are or their beliefs. It also means that properties must be made accessible to people with disabilities. In addition to preventing discrimination, Fair Housing Law also requires landlords to make reasonable accommodations for tenants with disabilities, allows landlords to set “reasonable” rules and regulations, and prohibits certain types of advertising that could indicate a preference or restriction for certain groups. Fair Housing Law is an important protection for all Californians and should be respected and enforced. If someone feels they have been the subject of housing discrimination, they can file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
