What does Fair Housing Law protect against?
Fair Housing Law, is a law in Virginia intended to protect individuals and families from discrimination based on race, color, national origin, gender, disability, and familial status when seeking housing. The law made it illegal for landlords, property owners, lenders, and other housing related industries to discriminate against any protected individuals from renting, selling, or obtaining financing for housing. The law prevents landlords from refusing to rent or selling homes, apartments, or condos to people based on any of their protected statuses, such as their race, gender, religion, or disability. It also prevents landlords from charging a different rent or security deposit to people of a certain race, color, or national origin. The law also guards against discrimination for people with disabilities. Landlords cannot refuse to rent or sell a home to a person with a disability, and must also make reasonable accommodations and modifications to the premises. Furthermore, they cannot charge a higher rent or security deposit for a person with a disability. Additionally, Fair Housing Law offers protection for families with children. Landlords cannot refuse to rent to families with children, and cannot charge higher rent to those families either. Fair Housing Law is intended to provide equality and equity in housing for all individuals and families within Virginia. It is a law that allows for the prevention of discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, disability, and familial status.
