What are the protected classes under Fair Housing Law?
Fair Housing Law in Washington protects people from discrimination in housing based on certain characteristics. The protected classes under Fair Housing Law include race, color, national origin, religion, sex, family status, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity and military status. This includes treating someone differently if they dress or practice their religion in a certain way. Sex and gender discrimination is illegal, meaning an individual cannot be treated differently because of their gender or sex, including transgender status. Discrimination based on family status is also prohibited, meaning individuals cannot be treated differently because they have children or are pregnant. Fair Housing Law in Washington also protects individuals with disabilities or chronic illnesses. Marital status discrimination is also prohibited, meaning an individual cannot be treated differently if they are married, single, separated, divorced, or widowed. Finally, Fair Housing Law in Washington also protects individuals from discrimination based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, military status, and genetic information. All of these characteristics are protected by law and individuals should not be discriminated against because of any of these characteristics.
