What happens if my property is damaged by a fire and I don’t have insurance?

If your property is damaged by a fire and you don’t have fire insurance, you may be able to apply for financial assistance from the North Dakota State Fire Insurance Board. This board is in place to help people pay for damages caused by fire that they are not otherwise able to pay for. To do this, you must apply to the State Fire Insurance Board within 45 days of when the fire occurred. You will need to provide evidence of the damage, such as photographs and written descriptions. You will also need to show that you weren’t able to obtain fire insurance. You may also need to provide documentation of your income, so that the board can determine its ability to assist. Once you have submitted all of the necessary documents, the board will review them and make a decision on whether to provide financial assistance for your fire-related damages. If approved, the board will provide funds for both direct and indirect costs associated with the fire damage. The board may also provide assistance for replacement items. Finally, if the board is unable to provide financial assistance, you may be able to receive assistance from other state or local programs, such as the Community Development Block Grant Program or the Local Emergency Management Assistance Program. You should contact your city or county officials to learn more about these programs.
