Does a grandparent have the right to attend a grandchild’s sporting events?

In Hawaii, a grandparent does have the right to attend their grandchild’s sporting events. This right is granted by the Grandparents Rights Law in Hawaii. This law states that the right of reasonable visitation with a grandchild is granted to grandparents if the grandchild’s parents are divorced, separated, or if one or both parents are deceased. If the grandchild’s parents have not divorced, separated, or passed away, the grandparent can petition the court for visitation rights. The court would determine if the grandparent would be granted visitation rights based on factors such as the past relationship of the grandparent and grandchild, the grandparent’s mental and physical health, and other relevant factors. If granted, visitation rights could include the right to attend the grandchild’s sporting events. In order to exercise their visitation rights to attend a grandchild’s sporting events, a grandparent should work with the grandchild’s parents and reach a consensus that is mutually beneficial and respectful. The grandparent should also be mindful of any rules set by the child’s school or sporting organization, such as whether or not outside spectators are allowed. Ultimately, a grandparent has the right to attend their grandchild’s sporting events under the Grandparents Rights Law in Hawaii. While the rights of visitation must go through the court in some situations, the grandparent should strive to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding with their grandchild’s parents. This respect and understanding can help create a positive experience for all involved.
