What are the applicable laws in a grandparent's state that relate to visitation rights?

In the state of Maryland, grandparent’s rights are protected under a few different laws. The Grandparent Visitation Law allows a grandparent to file a petition for court-ordered visitation rights with a child if their relationship with the child has been denied by the child’s parents. In court, the grandparent must prove that a meaningful relationship with the grandchild has been denied and demonstrate that court-ordered visitation is in the best interest of the child. In addition, the Maryland Right of Grandparents Act grants grandparents the right to visitation rights with their grandchild if the grandchild’s parents fall under certain predetermined criteria such as death, divorce, or legal separation. In this case, the grandparent must demonstrate that the visitation is in the child’s best interest, and the court will take into consideration factors such as the age of the child, the length of time the grandparent has been absent from the grandchild’s life, and the grandparent’s previous relationship with the child. The Maryland Grandparent Responsible Relationships Act also gives grandparents the right to seek court-ordered visitation with their grandchildren. Under this law, the grandparent must prove that the grandchild’s parents have unreasonably denied or limited the grandparent’s contact with the grandchild and again demonstrate that court-ordered visitation is in the best interest of the child. All of these laws are applicable in the state of Maryland and provide grandparent’s with the right to seek court-ordered visitation with their grandchildren.
