Are grandparents allowed to be informed about their grandchild’s whereabouts?
In Washington, grandparents do have some rights when it comes to the well-being of their grandchildren. They are allowed to request information about their grandchild’s welfare, such as general information about their grandchild’s health, education, and family situation. Grandparents can also request visitation rights, although this is ultimately up to the parent to agree to or deny. Regarding specific locations of the grandchild, Washington law does not guarantee grandparents the right to know the exact whereabouts of their grandchildren. However, grandparents are allowed to petition the court for an order on visitation or communication with their grandchild. If the court rules in favor of the grandparents, the parents may be required to provide reasonable notice of the grandchild’s whereabouts, such as with a schedule of visitation rights or a reasonable notice of the child’s whereabouts in the event of relocation. In general, grandparents in Washington should be encouraged to stay in touch with their grandchildren and to be aware of the general welfare of their grandchild. The courts can be helpful if parents do not voluntarily provide this information but grandparents should be aware that, in general, they do not have the automatic right to be informed about the exact whereabouts of a grandchild.
