Does a grandparent have an obligation to provide financial support for their grandchild?
In Washington, grandparents do not have an obligation to provide financial support for their grandchild, according to current Grandparents Rights Law. However, a grandparent may have an obligation to support their grandchild if they have voluntarily assumed the obligation. This can be seen by agreeing to provide the grandchild with certain financial support, such as paying for their schooling, clothing, food and transportation. Additionally, in some cases a judge may order a grandparent to provide financial support for their grandchild. This is usually done when the grandparent has financial means to do so, and when there is no other family member who is able to provide financial support. In general, financial support from a grandparent is a voluntary arrangement rather than an obligation. Grandparents who want to provide financial support for their grandchild can decide to do so out of love and generosity, or to supplement care provided by the child’s parents. If the grandparent does choose to provide financial support for their grandchild, it is important for them to draw up a legally binding contract with the child’s parent that outlines any financial obligations. This can help protect both the grandparent and the child in the event of a dispute.
